Anne Moncrief Layman Nursing Scholarship Endowment

Purpose

To promote careers in the nursing profession by awarding scholarships to students pursuing a degree as a Registered Nurse and who meets the basic requirements as outlined in the scholarship guidelines.

Background

The Anne Moncrief Layman Nursing Scholarship Endowment was established in 2016 in honor of Anne Moncrief Layman by her family. Anne became interested in nursing while in high school, working as an aide in Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Va. After graduation, she entered MCV school of nursing, now VCU-MCV, earning a RN-BSN. While there, Anne met and married a medical student. After settling in the Hopewell area, and her children were in school, she had an opportunity to return to the profession she loved. A program at Petersburg General Hospital, now Southside Regional Medical Center, allowed her to update her nursing skills. Anne worked there as a head nurse for 12 years, worked at John Randolph Hospital on the cardiac care unit and then part time as a nursing supervisor.

Anne Moncrief Layman was a very compassionate and caring nurse whose goal was competent, personal, comfort care. This scholarship is established in her honor to continue her dream of encouraging students interested in nursing to develop skills, compassion, professional and ethical standards, to achieve his or her dream of a wonderful career.
