Marvin Massenburg, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Endowment

Purpose

To promote continuing education by awarding scholarships for any course of study. However, priority may be given to a student who is pursuing a career in the field of Engineering, Computer Science or a Technology related field and/or has played on the Prince George High School Band. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, good citizenship, financial need and a commitment to the community through volunteer service. Institutions may include technical colleges, community colleges, and four-year colleges/universities.

Background

"Marvin, Jr., or MJ as everyone called him, always lit up a room whenever he walked in", said his dad, Marvin, Sr. "He was just one of those kids that everyone liked to be around, always positive and ready to help anyone in need", said his mom, Sharon.

MJ's parents tell stories of his compassion for other people; and how his own struggle with weight in his early teen years made him empathize with persons who may be dealing with weight issues. He had a gentle spirit, which is probably why he decided to give up football to devote more time to band. Everyone in the band was very close, like family and MJ loved being part of it. He played tuba and his fellow musicians at Prince George High School feel like they have lost a family member.

MJ was a senior at Prince George High School and was only weeks away from his eighteenth birthday. He was a straight A student that dreamed of attending the University of Virginia and becoming an engineer like his aunt. Knowing the kind of young man MJ was and considering his academic record, that he would have been an excellent candidate for one of John Randolph Foundation's scholarships.

Family, Friends and the Prince George Community wish to honor Marvin Jr.'s memory by creating this scholarship in order to assist other special young people like him to reach their educational goals.

Policy

This $1,000 scholarship will be available for seniors or graduates of Prince George High School with priority given to a student who 1). will pursue a career in the field of Engineering, Computer Science or a Technology related field, 2). and/or has played on the Prince George High School Band. Students may continue to reapply for this scholarship as they continue through their educational experience. However, receipt of this scholarship does not guarantee future awards. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply; however, foundation trustees, other foundation employees and their immediate families (parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, and anyone claimed as a dependent for tax purposes) are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Applicants Must

1. Express an interest in attending college as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student (at least 6 hours per semester);
2. Priority given to a student Pursuing a career in the field of Engineering, Computer Science or a Technology related field and/or has played on the Prince George High School Band.
3. Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application ONLINE to include the required documents which must be uploaded with the application;
4. Demonstrate financial need;
5. Demonstrate commitment to the community through Extra-Curricular Activities and Volunteer Service; and
6. Must have a G.P.A of 2.0 or better.

• (5 Points) Play Band at PGHS

Procedure

The scholarship amount is $1,000 and will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary.

Required Documents

All required documents must be uploaded with the application. Any mailed or hand-delivered documents will not be accepted.

• Academic Transcript(s) (High School or College whichever applies.)
• FAFSA Submission Summary (which includes the Student Aid Index (SAI): formally known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC). SAI is an eligibility index number used to determine federal student aid and is generated from the completed FAFSA Application.
• Two Letters of Recommendation (Current)

Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the Marvin Massenburg, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection.

The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program.
