Sylvia J. Slominski Nursing Scholarship Endowment

Purpose

To promote careers in the nursing profession by awarding scholarships to students pursuing a degree as a Registered Nurse.

Background

The Sylvia J. Slominski Nursing Scholarship Endowment was established in 2009 in honor of Sylvia J. Slominski by her husband, Michael H. Slominski. Having received her RN from the Sisters of Charity Nursing School in Buffalo, New York, she married her husband, a career military officer and followed him around the world working in military and civilian hospitals along the way. She practiced her craft at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, New York Kirk Army Hospital in Aberdeen, Maryland, U.S. Army Medical Center at Camp Kue, Okinawa, Japan, Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre De Grace Maryland, as a Red Cross Volunteer in Yongsan, South Korea and at Petersburg General Hospital (now known as Southside Regional Medical Center) in Petersburg, Virginia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Chapman University and her Master's Degree from Central Michigan University. Having worked as a Medical/Surgical Nurse, an Emergency Room Nurse, and as an instructor (she developed and taught the Medical Technician Program at Petersburg General), she is an advocate of continuing education and excellent fundamental training for nurses. She holds uncompromising standards of excellence and professionalism in the nursing profession.

Policy

The scholarship program is available to residents of the Tri-Cities area (Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights), Prince George and Chesterfield Counties and includes students who may not reside in these areas, but attend: L.C. Byrd High School and Cosby High School Health Sciences Specialty Center. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply; however, foundation trustees, other foundation employees and their immediate families (parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, and anyone claimed as a dependent for tax purposes) are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Applicants Must

  1. Be attending or accepted in college as a full time undergraduate (at least 6 hours per semester) or graduate student in the nursing field, or accepted in a hospital sponsored registered nurse program (Southside Regional Medical Center Nursing School, Bon Secours, VCU, or similar program);
  2. Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application ONLINE to include the required documents which must be uploaded with the application;
  3. Demonstrate financial need and;
  4. Must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better

Procedure

The scholarship amount is $2,000 and will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary.

Required Documents

All required documents must be uploaded with the application. Any mailed or hand-delivered documents will not be accepted.

Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the Sylvia J. Slominski Nursing Scholarship Endowment. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection.

The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program.
