MAC (Creery) Scholarship Fund
Purpose
To promote higher learning for a person pursuing a career in any discipline by awarding scholarships to individuals who demonstrate financial need and the desire to better themselves through continuing education. Institutions may include four-year universities, community colleges, technical colleges, vocational schools, certification courses, or continuing education courses. Priority will be given to descendants of Mark Andrew Creery. Priority may also be given to alumni of Maggie L. Walker Governors School for Government & International Studies and individuals who have experienced the loss of a parent. This scholarship may be renewable for three additional consecutive years, provided the applicant continues to meet all criteria and submits an application for renewal.
Background
The MAC Scholarship was established in February 2020 in memory of Mark Andrew (Andy) Creery, Jr., in accordance with the wishes of his beloved family and friends. An aficionado of all forms of academic achievement, intense political debate, his Cuban heritage, and the Wu Tang Clan, Mark Andrew Creery, Jr. was among the first students selected from Hanover County to attend the Governors School for Government & International Studies, graduating and continuing his education at James Madison University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He devoted much of his time to the Richmond Volleyball Club, serving as the Chairman of the Board the last years of his life. His greatest pride was found in the intelligence and quick wit of his children, and in supporting the achievement of those striving to better themselves against all odds. This scholarship is funded by private donations made in memory of Andy Creery by those who knew and loved him best.
Policy
The scholarship program is available to students attending or who have graduated from any high school in John Randolph Foundation’s service area who demonstrate financial need and the desire to better themselves through higher learning, in whatever form it may take. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply; however, foundation trustees, other foundation employees and their immediate families (parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, and anyone claimed as a dependent for tax purposes) are not eligible to apply.
Scholarship Applicants Must
- Be accepted to or enrolled in any program or course of study administered by any accredited college, university, community college, technical college, vocational school, or certification program.
- Submit a completed “John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application” online, along with all required documents uploaded with the completed application.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.0 or better.

Procedure
The scholarship amount is $1,500 and will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary.
Required Documents
All required documents must be uploaded with the application. Any mailed or hand-delivered documents will not be accepted.
- Academic Transcript(s) (High School or College whichever applies.)
- FAFSA Submission Summary (which includes the Student Aid Index (SAI): formally known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC). SAI is an eligibility index number used to determine federal student aid and is generated from the completed FAFSA Application.
- Two Letters of Recommendation (Current)
Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the MAC (Creery) Scholarship Fund. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection.
The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program.
