Mazacoufa Family Scholarship Endowment

Purpose

Fund shall be used to provide need-based scholarships to undergraduate students attending the University of Virginia who graduated from Hopewell High School and who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Foundation.

Background

The Fund is established and dedicated to honor the memory of Stamatios (“Sam”) and Argyro (“Irene”) Mazacoufa who immigrated from Greece to the United States as children in the early years of the 20th Century, met and married as adults, and set as their goal the education their five children, all of whom were born and raised in Hopewell, Virginia, graduated from Hopewell High School, and attended the University of Virginia during the decades of the 1950s and 1960s. The Fund is established to recognize the work ethic of these parents who owned and operated a small family business known as the White House Cafeteria in downtown Hopewell and their commitment to the idea that through education they would improve the lives of their children and, by extension, the general community. To that end, the Fund is established to provide funding at the Foundation to support students attending the University of Virginia from Hopewell who demonstrate financial need.

Policy

Recipients of scholarships from the Fund shall be students from Hopewell High School (or its successor institution as determined by the Foundation) who meet the academic standards to be admitted to the University of Virginia and who demonstrate a need for financial assistance as determined by the Foundation. If one or more recipients are selected for scholarships according to the Donor’s preference(s) and there are remaining funds available, or if the Donor’s preference(s) cannot be met in any given year because no students who meet the preferred criteria can be identified, the income may be reinvested with the Fund corpus. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply, however, foundation trustees, other foundation employees and their immediate families (parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, and anyone claimed as a dependent for tax purposes) are not eligible to apply.
