Moses Eugene Malone, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

Purpose

To promote continuing education for any course of study by awarding scholarships to a deserving Petersburg High School student-athletes in memory of Moses Eugene Malone Sr., Class of 1974, who passed away on September 13, 2015 in his sleep in Norfolk, VA. He was scheduled to attend a charity golf tournament that day. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, generally viewed and accepted as a natural team leader by coaches and teammates, good citizenship and plan on attending institutions which may include technical colleges, community colleges, and four-year colleges/universities.

Background

Big Mo, as so many called him was a very giving person. He gave without hesitation. However, the stories, told and untold, reveal how he also gave financially to those in a time of need. He had an empathetic heart and a humble passion for community. Couple that with his infectious sense of humor and outgoing personality and he had the ability to pull out the best in anyone! Before becoming a professional, Moses attended Petersburg High School where he played basketball. Petersburg went undefeated in Moses' final two years, winning 50 games and the Virginia State Championship both years. Moses Malone is a legend in every sense of the word and leaves an unmatched footprint in the hearts and minds of those who were blessed to know him.

Policy

This scholarship will be available to seniors or graduates of Petersburg High School with priority given to a student who is a student athlete. Students may continue to reapply for this scholarship as they continue through their educational experience. However, receipt of this scholarship does not guarantee future awards.

Scholarship Applicants Must

  1. Candidates for the Moses Eugene Malone, Sr. Memorial Scholarship will be student-athletes who best exemplify Moses's stewardship, fun loving attitude, and dedication to people and the community.
  2. Candidates will also be expected to meet the following minimum criteria;
  3. Be Attending or Express an interest in attending technical colleges, community colleges, and four-year colleges/universities as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student (at least 6 hours per semester;
  4. Generally viewed and accepted as a natural team leader by coaches and teammates;
  5. Submit a completed John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application ONLINE which includes the ability to UPLOAD the required attachments requested on the application;
  6. Must have a G.P.A of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (exceptions allowed for extraordinary circumstances or extenuating reasons).

Procedure

The scholarship amount is $1,000 and will be paid directly to the school for current year tuition, fees, books purchased through the institution attended, and on-campus dormitory and meal plan expenses. The scholarship committee will review and evaluate all applications and announce awards each spring. The committee will also review and revise the scholarship policy and criteria as necessary.

Required Documents

All required documents must be uploaded with the application. Any mailed or hand-delivered documents will not be accepted.

Failure to submit the online application with all documents attached to the application by the deadline will disqualify an applicant from consideration for the Moses Eugene Malone, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. The John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Committee reserves the right to interview applicants in the final stages of selection.

The decision of the scholarship committee in all matters regarding scholarships is final. Canvassing a scholarship benefactor, any John Randolph Foundation trustee or employee shall result in immediate disqualification. Scholarship awards are subject to the availability of funds, meeting the criteria as outlined in the guidelines of the individual scholarship program and contingent upon acceptance and enrollment in an approved program.
